what is the risk of outsourcing a training or documentation project?

actually, there are three areas of risk. when you outsource a project there is always a risk to project completion, to project quality, and to security of your intellectual property.

project management

cpt t&d has extensive experience in project management of training and documentation projects. we use common project management practices and principles that lead projects to successful completion. we are confident we can design and develop materials, for both large and small projects, using the appropriate level of formality and flexibility required to see a project come in on-time and within budget. our use of effective communication and leadership skills drive projects to completion with a level of service our customers trust and appreciate.

quality

we know that quality is defined by the customer. but, we believe you will agree that quality training and documentation:

  • meets the needs of the business,
  • adheres to proven methodology,
  • is accepted by all who encounter it, and
  • is professional in appearance.

before embarking on the project's design, we take time to verify with the customer that all business needs the project is suppose to support have been identified. we also make an all-out effort to identify possible constraints the project may encounter and either suggest or implement solutions to eliminate those constraints. we incorporate thoroughly researched techniques to insure the program or material is accurate and presented in the most effective, professional manner.

security

cpt t&d has worked with many organizations that require non-disclosure agreements. we will maintain total confidentiality with you and your organization's valuable intellectual property. if necessary, we will work onsite with your systems. we use the latest encryption technology and create secure communication protocols to ensure your security is not compromised.

why use a vendor instead of internal resources?

the answer depends on your circumstance. here are a few reasons our customers have shared with us.

"we have an internally developed software program that is scheduled to be deployed at the end of this quarter. we have to get our people trained on how to use this program as it is being deployed. we don't have the training development resources to support the deployment."

"our training people insist they will not start development until they have conducted a needs assessment, which they say will take at least two months. how much assessment do they need? only a handful of people here know how to do this."

"the training manager says they are booked solid for two quarters and will not be able to accommodate us unless we get permission to bump someone else's project."

"the training group will develop web-based materials, but they need four to six months to finish a project. we can't wait that long."

"our experts don't have time to develop the software and the business process training we need."

"our finance people have compared the cost of internal to vendor developed training and it pays to outsource at least 30% of the development, similar to the reason why we use contractors in our manufacturing."

how can cpt t&d develop training or documentation in an area they have no content expertise in?

we start answering this question by asking another. would you attempt to write and submit legal papers without the aid of a lawyer? unless you are a lawyer yourself, probably not. a lawyer spends years learning the law and how the judicial system works, then develops the skills required to apply that knowledge.

the same perspective is what makes cpt t&d unique. cpt t&d associates have spent years studying adult learning theories, modern instructional methodologies and technologies, the instructional systems design (isd) model, project management philosophies, and on... and on... and on. more importantly, as each project brings its own unique needs, our experience has allowed us to develop the skills required to effectively apply that knowledge to each particular project.

from our experience we have developed a highly effective process for teaming with an organization's internal experts. in systematic collaboration with your experts, we will design and develop effective, efficient training programs and documentation. cpt t&d has developed training and documentation with subject content ranging from basic motorcycle maintenance to operation of mutli-million dollar machinery to concepts dealing with advanced physics.

our business is built around the fact that we create instructionally sound training and user-friendly, accurate documentation -- no matter what the subject might be.
